Spain broke their trophy drought two years ago by lifting the European Championship in Austria and are second favourites for the title this summer in South Africa behind five time champions Brazil. La Furia Roja were impressive in qualifying, winning all ten games in their group to finish with a perfect record.

Spain’s strength lies in their midfield, where Barcelona’s Xavi and Andres Iniesta regularly tame opponents into submission with their passing game. However Iniesta is a major injury doubt for Spain’s group opener against the Swiss. However with the likes of David Silva, Cesc Fabregas and Xabi Alonso available at Del Bosque’s disposal, the front two of David Villa and Fernando Torres need not worry about the quality of service from midfield.

Switzerland went out of the last World Cup without conceding a single goal. With Spain expected to top the group, the race for second spot essentially looks to be a straight battle between the Swiss and Marcelo Bielsa’s Chile.

The Swiss lost three consecutive international friendlies against Norway, Uruguay and Costa Rica before managing to draw 1-1 with world champions Italy. Basel striker Alexander Frei is an injury doubt for this clash, and should he not recover in time, Eren Derdiyok is expected to be pencilled in as his replacement. Frei was sorely missed by the Swiss at Euro 2008 and has single handedly carried their attacking burden for a long time. Other key players for Ottmar Hitzfeld’s side include goalkeeper Diego Benaglio, defender Philippe Senderos and midfielders Gokhan Inler and Tranquillo Barnetta. The Swiss are a well organised team, but they will have to be at their best to prevent Spain from unlocking their defence.
