Switzerland had beaten Spain 1-0 in their opening fixture, but their hopes of qualifying for the next round took a hit when they lost to Chile by the same score line in their second game. Steve Von Burgen slotted in for the injured Senderos in defence, while captain Alexander Frei also returned to the starting XI. However the Swiss were dealt a huge blow when midfielder Valon Behrami was sent off in the first half by Saudi referee Khalil Al Ghamdi for a foul on Chile’s Arturo Vidal.
Coach Ottmar Hitzfeld immediately reorganised his side by bringing in Tranquillo Barnetta for Frei, and the Swiss defence held firm despite the numerous Chilean forays into their half. They set a new World Cup record for the most number of minutes without conceding a goal before Mark Gonzalez finally broke the deadlock for Chile.
Honduras suffered their second successive defeat in Group H when they went down 2-0 to Spain. Los Catrachos were second best to Spain for most of the game and were mostly restricted to their own half as Spain bossed possession. David Villa scored both goals for Spain and could have had a third if he had not missed a penalty.
Despite the loss, Honduras are still in with a chance to qualify. For this to happen, they must beat Switzerland and hope that Chile beat Spain in the other fixture. In such a scenario it would come down to goal difference. For Switzerland, a win would be the most preferable result as Spain are not expected to lose to Chile. If Spain and Switzerland both draw, the former go through because of their better goal difference. If Spain and Switzerland both win, Spain will automatically qualify and it will come down to goal difference between Chile and Switzerland.
