The United States have two points from two games in Group C. A win over Algeria will automatically see them qualify for the next round. A draw against the Algerians would require England not to beat Slovenia. Bob Bradley’s men drew 2-2 against Slovenia in their last game, and could have even won it had Maurice Edu’s goal not been controversially disallowed.
The US were trailing 2-0 against Slovenia at half time, but showed great spirit to pick up a point from the game. Landon Donovan scored their first goal, latching on to a pass that was completely missed by Bostjan Cesar, and racing into the box before firing past Handanovic. Midfielder Michael Bradley scored the equaliser on 82 minutes, sliding the ball into the roof of the net after Jozy Altidore had knocked down a cross into his path. Maurice Edu then volleyed home from Donovan’s free kick, but referee Coulibaly disallowed the strike.
Algeria were not expected to trouble mighty England in Cape Town, but the Desert Foxes made their nation proud by picking up a point. Their back three of Bougherra, Halliche and skipper Yahia played well to keep England’s stars at bay. The result also kept Algeria in the hunt for a knockout place, but they need to win against the United States to have any hopes of progressing.
Striker Robbie Findley is suspended for the United States after picking up yellow cards against England and Slovenia. Algerian forward Abdelkader Ghezzal is again available for selection after missing the England game through suspension. Algerian coach Rabah Saadane could again revert to Faouzi Chaouchi in goal if he recovers from his knee injury.
