The United States needed a last gasp goal for Landon Donovan to qualify for the knockout stages. England had beaten Slovenia 1-0 in the other game, meaning that the United States needed a win to progress. In second half injury time, Donovan grabbed the winner that sent Bob Bradley’s team through to the last 16 at the expense of Slovenia. It also ensured that the USA finished as winners of their group- a feat they last achieved in 1930.

Against Algeria, Bradley took the surprise decision of leaving Oguchi Onyewu on the bench. He shifted captain Carlos Bocanegra to the centre to partner DeMerit and started with Jonathan Bornstein on the left. Onyewu was good against England and Slovenia, especially against the former, and his 6’4” frame is an asset for the team at defending set pieces. It remains to be seen whether Bradley restores Onyewu to the starting lineup against Ghana or chooses to persist with the Bocanegra-DeMerit pairing.

Ghana started off their World Cup with a stunning win over Serbia. A draw against 10 man Australia followed and their last game saw them lose to Joachim Low’s Germany. However they managed to qualify as their goal difference was better than third placed Australia’s. The Black Stars had plenty of chances to score against the Germans, but their strikers simply failed to turn up on the day. It will be a matter of concern for Ghana that they have yet to score a normal goal at this World Cup- both of their goals so far have come from the penalty spot.

The two sides met at the 2006 World Cup and Ghana won 2-1 thanks to strikes from Haminu Dramani and Stephen Appiah on either side of Clint Dempsey’s goal for the United States.
