France were uninspiring in qualifying, and their coach, the much maligned Raymond Domenech will vacate the position for Laurent Blanc after the World Cup. Domenech is however the man who has coached Les Bleus in the most number of games, and he will be keen to go out on a high.
France’s performance in their three pre World Cup international friendlies has done nothing to inspire confidence. A narrow win over Costa Rica was followed by a draw against Tunisia and an embarrassing loss to minnows China. The defeat to China was a grave cause for concern because the Asian team were missing several of their first team players.
Domenech has switched from his traditional 4-2-3-1 to a more attacking 4-3-3. However the lone centre forward in that system, Chelsea’s Nicolas Anelka, has failed to fire in recent games, and could be replaced by Barcelona’s Thierry Henry, Toulouse’s Andre Pierre-Gignac or Panathinaikos’ Djibril Cisse in Friday’s opener. Domenech’s change of formation has also resulted in Yoann Gourcuff and Florent Malouda having to play more deep, with Sidney Govou and Franck Ribery chosen to support Anelka on the flanks.
France’s central defensive pairing of William Gallas and Eric Abidal will have to be wary of the attacking threat possessed by the Uruguayans. La Celeste have Diego Forlan and Luis Suarez upfront. Forlan suffered a thigh injury in training and should he fail to recover, Suarez will be partnered by either Edinson Cavani or veteran Sebastien Abreu.
Uruguay played France at the 2002 World Cup in Busan. The fixture ended in a goalless stalemate, a result that did not really help either team to progress to the next round. Henry and Cisse are France’s only survivors from that game eight years ago. Both Uruguay and France qualified for the 2010 World Cup via the playoffs- Uruguay beat Costa Rica, while France needed a controversial strike to overcome the Republic of Ireland.
