Ghana joined Cameroon and Senegal in the short list of African nations to have qualified for the quarterfinals of the World Cup when they beat the United States 2-1 in the Round of 16. Pompey midfielder Kevin Prince Boateng gave the Black Stars the lead in the 5^th minute of the game after US midfielder Ricardo Clark lost possession of the ball on the half way line.

Ghana dominated the first half an hour, forcing USA coach Bob Bradley to bring on Maurice Edu for Clark. On the hour mark, Jonathan Mensah brought Clint Dempsey down in the box, thereby allowing Landon Donovan to equalise from the spot for the United States. Some poor finishing from the US strikers and great goalkeeping from Ghana’s Richard Kingson saw the score stay at 1-1 at the end of regulation time. In the third minute of extra time, Rennes forward Gyan Asamoah struck his third goal of the tournament to carry the Black Stars into the last eight for the first time in their history.

Uruguay rode on the back of a brace from Luis Suarez to beat a spirited South Korean side 2-1. After taking an early lead through Suarez, Oscar Tabarez’s men sat deep and allowed Korea to dictate the pace of the game. The Asians equalised when some indecision from Uruguayan keeper Fernando Muslera allowed Lee Chung-Young to head in an equaliser. However Suarez’s superb curling effort ten minutes from time proved to be a blow that the Koreans could not recover from.

Kevin Prince Boateng is a doubt for this game after picking up a hamstring injury against the United States. Man of the Match Andre Ayew and young defender Jonathan Mensah are suspended, leaving Ghana coach Milovan Rajevac with several key selection decisions to make ahead of Friday’s clash.
