The Dutch stunned tournament favourites Brazil in the quarterfinals of the tournament. A mistake from defender Andre Ooijer, a last minute replacement for the injured Joris Mathijsen, allowed Robinho to give Brazil an early lead. Holland keeper Maarten Stekelenburg was then forced to make an excellent save to deny Kaka as Brazil looked the more dominant side going into the break.
Bert van Marwijk’s side forced their way back into the game when Wesley Sneijder’s cross was turned by Juventus midfielder Felipe Melo into his own net. Fifteen minutes later, Arjen Robben’s corner was flicked into the path of Sneijder by Dirk Kuyt, and the Inter Milan playmaker nodded in from close range to put Holland ahead. Robben was a constant threat to Brazil down the right flank and it came as no surprise when Felipe Melo lost his cool and was sent off for a stamp on the Bayern winger. Holland used their one man advantage and held off the Brazilians to record a famous win. Midfielder Nigel de Jong and right back Gregory van der Wiel will miss the semifinal due to suspension.
Uruguay ended Ghana’s dream of becoming the first African nation to reach the semifinals of the World Cup when they beat the Black Stars on penalties. Sulley Muntari’s stunning long range effort gave Ghana the lead on the stroke of half time, but Uruguay equalised when Diego Forlan curled in a free kick. There was late drama as Uruguay strike Luis Suarez was sent off for handball in the dying seconds of extra time, but Ghana’s Gyan Asamoah made a hash of his spot kick, thereby taking the game to penalties.
Forlan, Mauricio Victorino and Andres Scotti converted Uruguay’s first three penalties. Ghana skipper John Mensah missed his side’s third, but Maxi Pereira’s failure to convert meant that Dominic Adiyiah could put his side on level terms by scoring. However Adiyiah missed and veteran striker Sebastien Abreu made no mistake for Uruguay from twelve yards out as La Celeste triumphed 4-2 on penalties.
