Uruguay have reached the Round of 16 at the World Cup after a gap of two decades. Their last appearance in the knockout stages of this quadrennial tournament came in 1990, where they lost 2-0 to hosts Italy in Rome. La Celeste are bidding to reach the quarterfinals for the first time since 1970.

Uruguay played extremely well to top Group A. They started off with a goalless draw against France, then beat hosts South Africa 3-0 and finished their group engagements with a 1-0 win over Mexico in Rustenburg. Ajax Amsterdam skipper Luis Suarez scored the winner against the Mexicans and his partnership with Diego Forlan upfront will keep the Korean defenders on their toes throughout the fixture. Uruguay have been splendid at the back. Their defence, marshalled by skipper Diego Lugano, is yet to concede a single goal in South Africa.

Korea qualified for the Round of 16 with a 2-2 draw against Nigeria in their last Group B game. Coach Huh Jung-Moo thus became the first Korean coach to guide the national side to the knockout stages of the World Cup. Against Nigeria, some atrocious from Cha Du-Ri allowed Kalu Uche to give the Super Eagles the lead, but Korea fought back to lead 2-1 through goals from Lee Jung-Soo and Park Chu-Young. Nigeria managed to find an equaliser through Yakubu, but the point was enough to take the Koreans through as Greece lost 2-0 to Argentina in Polokwane.

Korea have managed to score in each of their games so far but will not find things easy against the Uruguayans, who have looked very solid defensively. Teams in Group A not only failed to score against the South Americans, but also created very little of note to trouble Uruguayan keeper Fernando Muslera.
